Cascade Reserve is on the northern coast of Norfolk Island.


Size

Cascade Reserve occupies 32.5 hectares.


Geology

The cliffs behind Cascade wharf show a sequence of volcanic eruptions.  At sea level is breccia but higher up the cliff there are layers of hard dark basalt and layers of softer tuff (volcanic ash).  The catchment for Cascade Creek (the land area that supplies the water for Cascade Creek) is 650 hectares (20% of the island).  Cascade Creek is one Norfolk’s few permanent creeks and flows into the sea at Cockpit. Why is it important for conservation?


Captain Cook named the waterfalls at Cockpit the “Cascades” when he discovered Norfolk Island in 1774.  A rocky outcrop in Cascade Bay was where the First European Settlement landed in 1788.  The village of Phillipsburg was laid out by Lt King in 1790 and was important for the flax industry, timber milling, fish processing and whaling.


There is a mature coastal mixed hardwood forest in the reserve.

  6. •Go fishing off the wharf or look for sharks after fishing boats clean fish.
