L.P. Gas in Norfolk Island

LP Gas produces less greenhouse gas emissions than diesel or coal-fired electricity and is a great option especially where natural gas is not available or you need portability (for example barbecues, fish-fryers, tradesmen).

Origin Energy owns two 50 tonne LP Gas storage tanks which are situated at their terminal at Ball Bay.  The gas is shipped to Norfolk Island and to other Pacific countries on a regular delivery schedule by two Origin Energy ocean tankers the lpgc BORAL GAS and the lpgc PACIFIC GAS.

Norfolk Island Gas Pty Limited (N.I.Gas) is the managing agent and distributor for Origin Energy in Norfolk Island.

The ocean tanker anchors in Ball Bay; the ship’s crew floats a hose in from the ship where the N.I. Gas staff on shore winches it on to land.  Once the hose is checked and ready for use, it is connected to the storage inlet and the ship’s pump commences pumping the LP Gas from the ocean tanker to the storage tanks on land.

LP Gas is used in Norfolk Island by many homes and businesses for cooking, water heating and room heating.  The gas is supplied to homes and small business users in 50kg exchange cylinders delivered and installed by the N.I.Gas driver.  For larger commercial users, delivery is made by a road tanker to a storage tank or large cylinder at the customers premises.

LP Gas (full name Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is the common name for mixtures of hydrocarbons (mainly propane and butane). When these mixtures are lightly compressed, they change from a gaseous state to a liquid. LP Gas is colourless, odourless and heavier than air. A sulfur based chemical (ethyl mercaptan) is added to give it a smell like rotten cabbage, so that users will be aware if there is a leak.

LP Gas burns readily in air and has energy content similar to petrol, which also makes it excellent for automotive use.

LP Gas (also called L.P.G) is currently the cheapest form of portable energy on Norfolk Island and has been for many years.
