hundred acres reserve

Hundred Acres Reserve is located on the south-western coast and it has sea cliffs on two of its sides.  It used to be called Rocky Point Reserve but was renamed because most people called it Hundred Acres anyway.

The reserve occupies 22.3 hectares of the island.

There is a huge basalt lava flow under the reserve which you can see at the cliffs.  At Rocky Point there is yellow tuff from a small eruption.  There are no permanent streams in the reserve.

Why is it important for conservation?

Parts of the reserve are coastal forest which is fairly free of weeds so native, endemic and endangered plants survive there.  Many birds nest in the forest so it is important to the bird populations.

Some native snail species are found in the southern part of the reserve.  This indicates that those areas were probably not cleared during the First or Second Settlements.

The rare native trees, Birdcatcher and Melky Tree are found in the reserve.  The Melky Tree’s sap is dangerous because it can cause blistering on the skin.  If it gets into eyes it is very painful and may cause blindness.

During the Twentieth Century experimental planting was done in the reserve.  Some of those trees and the concrete water tank used to water them still remain.

Best Bits

  1.     Follow the walking tracks through the reserve

  2.     Watch the nesting birds but don’t disturb them

  3.     Visit the area around the water tank that today resemble a traditional, botanic garden.

  4.     Identify the Birdcatcher and Melky Tree but don’t touch the Melky Tree.
