When was it built?

Quality Row is the street that runs through the settlement of Kingston.  It has all the important buildings on it such as the Old Military Barracks, the Commissariat Store and the New Military Barracks.  It is also where the people who ran the penal settlement lived.

       

The houses in Quality Row

The first houses built were very basic but later on stone buildings were built. These are the ones that are still there.

 

The houses in Quality Row are all similar, but some are slightly bigger than others. They have rooms in the front for the family, and rooms at the back for the servants. The servants did the washing and cooking at the back.  There is a courtyard in the middle where the family would sometimes sit outdoors.

 

Their uses during the Second Settlement

People like the Foreman of the Works, the Protestant Clergyman and the Magistrate lived in the houses. When they came to live on Norfolk Island they sometimes brought with them a few pieces of furniture.  They also had some made while on the island.  Their wives and children came too sometimes but not always.

 

Some of the very well behaved convicts acted as servants for the military and civilian officials and some of them even slept in the back of the house.

 

Their uses during the Third Settlement

When Norfolk Island was given to the people from Pitcairn Island some of them lived in the houses in Quality Row.  They lived there without paying rent at first. 

A magistrate decided that they should pay rent, and a dispute started which resulted in some people being turned out of their houses.  Some of the empty houses were then burned.

 

 Their uses today

Some of the houses are still lived in; one is a museum and another is an interpretive centre.
